Irith Mashiah's Jewellery + GiveAway #2 (till 15.12.2009)

As I first entered Irith Mashiah's Riorita.Jewellery.Shop I understood, that I could stay there at least for a week! I felt like I was told a beautiful ancient legend and like I myself was a part of it. I have prepared for you a small promenade through this wonderful shop accompanied by the story told by the artist herself. Enjoy and fall in love!

Riorita's Story:

I was born in Jerusalem, Israel. Later my parents moved to Tiberias by the Sea of Galilee, and when I grew up, have moved to the city of Haifa where I have been living ever since.

Before studying to becme a metalsmith, I worked as a secretary in a large oil company in Haifa. Even though I've worked there for 25 years, I simply hated the job, it was a real bore for me, but as I had a small child whom I wished to raise to become an independent person, I kept on at that job until she grew up. Now she is working as an Industrial Engineer, and is a wonderful person too, so that I feel I did not do so badly with her..

Before retiring, and as I have always loved to create, I decided to learn to be a silver and gold
smith, thinking that this is what I'd like to do when I retire.

I studied Jewelry Design at the External Studies department at the Wizo Academy of Design in Haifa and the Ort Technology Centre in Tel-Aviv and then continued privately with some of the best tutors in Israel.

I design and create jewelry in silver and gold combined with semi-precious stones or precious gems. I also use silver combined with gold and ancient and beach glass. Many of my items are hammered in the repousse' technique (hammered on top of a bowl of pitch) which gives them a three-dimensional or a sculptural effect. I also like to create hollow form jewelry. Some of my designs are symmetrical, such as geometrical shapes, hearts, butterflies or leaves, but I also like using asymmetrical shapes. Most of my items are either one of a kind items or limited edition jewelry...

What I mainly keep in my mind is that the purpose of jewelry is to beautify. Women should be feeling that they look beautiful and special when they wear jewelry and most of the time the jewelry that women wear teached us something about their personal taste and character.. Sometimes just a row or pearls can do the job, but on other occasions my jewelry adds a desirable effect.
